Grave drawing
Grave photoThomas and Sarah Sammons nee Chater, and their daughters Sarah Chater Sammons and Mary Ann Sammons. Thomas Sammons was born in 1793 and baptised at Stoneleigh on 9 July, the son of Joseph Sammons and his wife Mary nee Rotherham, who are buried at D 20.1 and D 20.2. Thomas married Sarah Chater in Frankton on 28 February 1815. She had been born in 1791 in Frankton and baptised there on 31 March; her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Chater nee Chater. The young couple had four daughters, Sarah Chater, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Helen. Thomas was farming at Fletchamstead Hall in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses, although as can be seen from his daughters' baptismal records, he had farmed elsewhere previously. He died on 6 August 1868 and was buried at Stoneleigh on 10 August. Probate was granted to his son-in-law Thomas Hands, farmer and grazier of Canley. Sarah Chater Sammons was the eldest daughter of Thomas Sammons and his wife Sarah nee Chater. She was born on 13 December 1815 and baptised at Stoneleigh on 9 January 1816, and also on 12 January at Frankton, her mother's native village. She died unmarried on 25 March 1852 at the age of 36, and was buried on 30 March, the register stating her residence as Fletchamstead. Her sister Mary Ann Sammons was the third of the four sisters, and was born in 1821 and baptised on 14 May at St John the Baptist, Coventry. The family at that point was living at Spon End though father Thomas was described as a farmer. He was probably farming at Hearsall, which was in Stoneleigh parish, as this had been noted in 1818 when another sister had been baptised. Mary Ann, like her sister Sarah, died unmarried, though she lived to the age of 86, dying on 27 February 1907. Her last address had been Whoberley Villas, Westwood Heath; one of her executors was Thomas Sammons Hands, her sister Elizabeth's son. She was buried at Stoneleigh on 4 March.
