Arthur was born in Ashow on 12 November 1870 and baptised there on 5 February 1871. By the time he was 10 the family lived at Vicarage Road Stoneleigh, where his father James was a carpenter and builder employing 3 men and 3 boys - a substantial business. Arthur was to follow in his father's footsteps, and was already a carpenter by the time he was 20. Indeed, he had set up on his own account by 1901, living in North Street Wolverhampton with his housekeeper Emily Wildman and several lodgers, and he continued to live in Wolverhampton. With Emily, who already had two children, he had two children, John and Nellie, but after Emily's death in 1927 he married Susannah Walker in 1931.
When Arthur died on 25 June 1954 it was in Coventry, and he was buried in the family village of Stoneleigh. He was 83.
