John Alun Edmonds 1816413 Sergeant (Flight Engineer) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
John Alun Edmonds was born in Coventry on 24 November 1916, the second son of John Odey Edmonds and his wife Margaret nee Williams. Two sisters were born in 1919 and 1922.
In mid-1938 John was married to Edna Beatrice Powell, in Coventry. He had attended Broad Street School in Coventry and then worked at Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft in Coventry.
At the time of his death on 25 July 1944 he had become a sergeant in the RAFVA and on the night of 24 July was flying with two others (one of whom was an Australian) on a Short Stirling III aircraft on night training from Winthorpe. Sadly the aircraft developed engine problems and while trying to land at Gaydon crashed just short of the runway at 0236 hours. All three men perished.
John had lived at 134, Anchorway Road, Coventry.
